Yes! Finally, some good news! I have flow!

Now, that may sound a bit strange to those who have not been following my trials and tribulations for the past year plus.

However, when I was discharged from my 5th hospital “vacation” in less than a year back in December 2011, I had no blood flow from my legs through my Inferior Venacava vein.

The Inferior Veinacava is the main “highway” for blood returning to the heart from the legs. When there is no flow through it, collateral veins form and take up the “slack”.

Unfortunately that doesn’t happen immediately. It takes time and that means that it is difficult to breathe and difficult to walk or exercise until that is accomplished. I now have a number of blue veins going up my body where only about a year ago there were none.

And now, the latest venous Doppler sonogram test this week shows I have near normal flow in my left leg and slow flow in my right leg. Not only that but there is some slow flow through the filter that was installed in the Inferior Veinacava.

The prognosis (as far as I know it) is for the clot to continue to dissipate. I expect to have full, normal flow in time. It has taken about six months to get to this point. In addition, the test revealed that some of the vein valves that were impacted by the clot are still functioning.

They may not be functioning at 100% but some function is better than none at all. In the meantime, my task is to keep doing what I have been doing. Exercise is very important. And yes, it is still a bit difficult to walk uphill and will be until I can get some conditioning back which also takes time.

Also, I am getting back into boat work that I have had to put off for nearly a year; and there is a lot.

The plan for this year is to continue to heal, become stronger, and then late in the year head in a general southerly direction (perhaps with a short northerly leg before heading south) with El Salvador and Panama in mind between Jan and EOM May 2013.

As always, no matter what, Never Give Up!
